Using more than one cypress species not only helps make sourcing more sustainable, but can also enhance the quality and beneficial properties of the essential oil. Many growers plant cypress trees as fences, windbreaks or shade trees, with the intention of eventually selling them as timber. However, it can take 20 to 30 years before a tree is ready for sale. In the meantime, the lower branches must be pruned so the tree grows straight enough for timber production. The essential oil is distilled from these lower branches.
